On January 23, 1848, gold was discovered on land belonging to John Sutter, in California. Once it was announced the news spread like wildfire.

My teen and I just finished studying the Gold Rush last month. I included some African American history from edHelper.com, in our curriculum. During the Gold Rush, free African Americans and slave laborers were there. Many slaves managed to gain their freedom from gold mining. Some black settlers became rich after mining gold. By 1852 California had the wealthiest black population of any state.
