"Zits" Comic Strip - We Love It!

Marcus' size 15

Charles reads "Zits" every morning. As usual, we feel that our family is the inspiration for the strip!

Take a look at this one.

Free Six Month YMCA Membership for the Unemployed

The unemployed can receive a six month YMCA membership for themselves and their family at any YMCA of Southern Nevada!

Bring in your Determination of Benefits letter and photo ID.

Charles and I love the gym! After a workout we head to the jacuzzi and hang out. We met other unemployed people, shared each other personal experiences and laughter.

A family friend told me that her sister recently joined her local YMCA. So, check with your local YMCA for details.

Nevada Drug Card - It Works!

Nevada residents can download a free discount prescription drug card, Nevada Drug Card and receive savings of up to 75% on their prescriptions at participating pharmacies. (CVS, Kmart, Albertsons, Walmart, Vons, Smith's, Sam's Club, and many other chain and independent pharmacies)

Use this card if you're without prescription coverage or your insurance doesn't cover your prescription.

I used the card at Smith's pharmacy yesterday for my generic Vicodin. It's usually $35 but with the card it dropped to $12.75! Charles and I were shocked! I almost cried!

Unemployment Websites and Blogs - Works For Me Wednesday

With the growing number of unemployed and underemployed households it's comforting to know that there are websites and bloggers sharing information and personal stories. Here's just a few of my favorites!

SuddenlyUnemployed- Why do I recommend this site? It offers tips for dealing with the emotions that come with being unemployed. I didn't see that at any other site.
You'll also find job search, financial and social service program assistance information.
The website does have a forum but they're very active on Facebook!

Survival Insight - For Economically Changing Times - From how to get health care when you have no insurance to complain to what to do if you can't pay your car loan you'll receive a variety of information that can be overwhelming when dealing with being unemployed!
You can sign up to receive updates or follow them on Twitter!

Smart Unemployment - You have questions regarding the new Unemployment Extensions? Well, you can get your's answered here.
I also like that they have information on dealing with your former company and unemployment benefit eligiblity.

The Prudent Homemaker- a beautiful website full of yummy recipes, food photos and personal story on surviving underemployment. She's been extremely helpful to our household, providing grocery shopping tips since she lives in our local area.

Small Town Blessings -a former Las Vegan relocating to a small town, you'll soon see that this family isn't just living but thriving! She blogs with humor and love and shows we can also be up to the task!

These favorite websites and blogs are what Works For Me!

How to Cope With Chronic Illness W/Out Insurance - My Question, Their Response

Red Rock Park in Las Vegas

I'm a fan of Survival Insight website and decided to send them a question, "For those of us that have chronic illnesses and no insurance could you please advise inexpensive health care and prescription tips?" ...Rona.

Their response, is a helpful article that many, with chronic illness, need to read!

One suggestion is utilizing free or reduced rate health clinics. I currently go to a sliding scale health clinic, offered through the Nevada Health Centers. My office visit is $25. In comparison to paying $100 for a doctor's visit this is a huge savings!

The article also suggest two alternative methods for those of us with chronic pain issues,EFT and Qigong. A fellow homeschooler mentioned EFT to me as a possible pain relief.

Consumer Credit Counseling - When You Need Help

ps the doctor's office that threaten me with collections called me back. They are going to eat the bill.

I knew I needed help when I had a doctor's office call and threaten me with collections. I decided to stop by our local consumer credit counseling website for some help.

I did the debt management worksheet, online and submitted it, on Friday afternoon. On Saturday morning I received a phone call from their office. We reviewed our expenses and income. The verdict...we actually have a deficit of $38 and they won't be able to do a plan because there isn't enough income.

The counselor did ask me why we weren't receiving food stamps. I informed her that we make too much money, based on the guidelines. Then she asked me how we were surviving. My response...Prayer!

Menu Plan Monday - November 16, 2009

Unemployed people sign up, online and save 20% on Kmart products

Last week, due some great purchases at Fresh & Easy we didn't have a thing from our menu plan. Marcus, our teen, broiled some New York Strips, that was on 50% sale, and steamed up some vegetables. Delicious!

This week, there's volunteer training for the Blessfest at Calvary Chapel Spring Valley. On Thanksgiving Day, Marcus is volunteering in the computer services and graphics department. I'll be helping out in the clothing distribution.

Charles' work hours at Kmart were reduced. We knew this was coming and starting preparing for it. He'll be reapplying for unemployment benefits next week.

I'm still searching but the job opportunities have really dried up. I'm lucky if I apply for one job a week.

Now onto this week's menu plan. Thanks to Organizing Junkie for her hosting duties. Feel free to join in the fun!
