20 New Year Reflections - My Responses!

1. What was the single best thing that happened this past year? Being committed to a mental hospital after a suicide attempt. It truly was a humbling experience. The doctors were able to find the right combination of anti-depression medication. I also discovered the pleasures of sleep! The first night home I sleep for 13 hours!

2. What was the single most challenging thing that happened? Learning to like the new calm, not depressed, not anxious Rona. It was difficult as I had to relearn how to carry daily duties, relationships and work as a mellow person. I now embrace this new me.

3. What was an unexpected joy this past year? Kiana, our "adopted" teen daughter, coming into our lives! Her mother kicked her out, she's a friend of our son and needed a place to live. Charles and I gave her a room, bought a bed, bedding, clothes, ect. We also gave her displine and love. Everyday is truly a blessing. Thank you Heavenly Father.

4. What was an unexpected obstacle? My husband's second lay off after just 4 months of working. The money was fantastic and for the first time we were really able to have breathing room.

5. Pick three words to describe 2010. hectic, surprising, fun

6. Pick three words your spouse would use to describe your 2010 (don’t ask them; guess based on how you think your spouse sees you). loving, tired, nurturing

7. Pick three words your spouse would use to describe their 2010 (again, without asking). disappointing, challenging, exhausting8. What were the best books you read this year? A Short Guide to a Happy Life by Anna Quindlen is a terrific read. Our son received as a high school graduation gift. One day I wasn't feeling well and thought I would give it a try. "Living your life deeply is the best gift God has given us". I loved it!

9. With whom were your most valuable relationships? Kiana, Marcus, Charles and the Heavenly Father

10. What was your biggest personal change from January to December of this past year? Dealing with my husband's second layoff after just 4 months of working a full time living wage job. Then our teenage son was laid off from his part time job. That left just my income which isn't much. I found myself angry, confused and drained. I really need to focus on my relationship with the Heavenly Father to resolve my feelings.

11. In what way(s) did you grow emotionally? After finding the right anti-depression medication I found I wasn't so hard on myself and my family. I learned to really appreciate the day and whatever it brought me.

12. In what way(s) did you grow spiritually? I was truly humbled while I was in the mental hospital. I was surrounded by dangerous people, drug addicts and realized this was my moment on my knees, wearing a hospital gown with no pants and unkept hair. I gave up control and let the Heavenly Father take over. It was truly a growing spirtual experience.

13. In what way(s) did you grow physically? I started challenging myself when we moved to an apartment complex that had a gym. I do cardio and work on various weight machines. Recently I started doing situps. This is something I never thought I would do as a chronic pain sufferer.

14. In what way(s) did you grow in your relationships with others? In my professional life, I find that I don't let customer frustration affect me in a negative way. I also made an extra effort to speak with people that I deal with in my day, like cashiers, receptionist, customer service reps and let them know that their efforts are appreciated.

15. What was the most enjoyable part of your work (both professionally and at home)? Being surprised with a Christmas bonus! I was able to treat Kiana to a hair color and trim before she left for her Christmas vacation.

16. What was the most challenging part of your work (both professionally and at home)? My pain level became unmanageable which made it difficult to focus and multi-task effectively. I found I needed to take time off from work. My husband, pain management doctor and I came to the conclusion to change my pain medication.

17. What was your single biggest time waster in your life this past year? Worry, it's constructive. Turning my worries over to the Heavenly Father is always the best answer.

18. What was the best way you used your time this past year? Stopping what I was doing and joining my hubby for relaxation. In the past, I just physically 'turn myself off'.19. What was biggest thing you learned this past year?
Even in the most difficult times one does find rewards from their family. We're broke but happy!

20. Create a phrase or statement that describes 2010 for you. What an interesting rollercoaster ride!

Things That I Learned Thursday - December 31, 2010

Red Rock Park in Las Vegas

It's very important to listen to your body. It's really trying to tell you something. This is in response to finally changing my pain medication after 10 years.

It's great to have Kiana and Marcus home. Charles and I enjoyed our alone time but we truly missed our rugrats. Besides, I had no one to do my fist pump with!

Charles and I realized that we're part of the working poor. When you look at your pay stub and see that you didn't even break $25,000 take home it's a sobering moment.

I'm glad that the Heavenly Father saved me in April. I tried to kill myself but the Lord had a different plan for me. After a stay in a mental hospital, the right medication I'm feeling so much better! He also brought Kiana into our lives! What an awesome God!

Love your life no matter what! Yes, 2010 has been an interesting year for us. Many struggles but lots of love and faith. Happy New Year!

They're Home! Kiana and Marcus Have Returned!

My husband and I were so thrilled when we got the call that they were only 15 minutes from The Strip. And even more excited when we saw them getting out of the car!

I must have hugged Marcus 5 times outside! Kiana was torn. She was happy to be home but very sad that she was leaving her dad in Salt Lake City.

Marcus got some great news. He had to work the following day at the local recreation center.

It's great to have our kidlets back home!

Outgrowing Your Pain Medication

TENS Unit - a device that can help control severe pain.

After 10 years of taking Loritab my body has informed it no longer is enough to control my pain.

Increasing migraines, severe muscle spasms, various stress disorders and days off from work helped me make the decision to change my pain medication.

With my husband by my side, my pain management doctor gave me the options of Mophine, Methadone or Percocet. We discuss the side effects and the fact that I could only get a monthly prescription due to the DEA guidelines.

I then called my prescription plan to verify coverage and co-pays. I highly recommend that you do this before having your doctor write you a prescription!

And my decision...Percocet.

Things I Learned This Thursday

Family Photo Collage

1. We didn't need to buy gifts for each other this year. And you know what? We don't miss them.

2. It's nice to be spending all these weeks on our own but we do miss the kids.

3. I love Swagbucks! I had enough bucks saved up that I redeemed them for a couple of gifts for Marcus and Kiana!

4. Don't forget to tip the special people in your life. "T", Kiana and I's hairstylist is so much fun and talented! I couldn't let Christmas go by without letting her know what she means to us.

5. The rainstorms that hit Las Vegas reminded me how dangerous too much rain can be. There were lots of car accidents and unfortunately a few fatalities.

Merry Christmas!

Menu Plan Monday ~ December 20, 2010

Marcus and Kiana, our teens, are having a great time in Salt Lake City. They're visiting Kiana's dad and family.

Every time we talk to them they comment on the clean air and streets. If you've ever lived in Las Vegas you'll know why they love this change of pace.

They went on a tour of the outside of the Salt Lake Temple. I hope they took lots of photos.

The hubby and I have been enjoying our time too. He took me out for lunch to Wild Buffalo Wings and had breakfast at IHOP. On Sunday, we went to Walmart and did some window shopping.

He's also been putting on the apron and making me dinner. Afterwards, we watch a DVD on Netflix or catch up on a TV series on Hulu. This so reminds me of when we were dating.

Now onto this week's menu plan. Thank you to Organizing Junkie for hosting Menu Plan Mondays. Oh, don't miss out on my $30 IHOP gift card giveaway!

Window Shopping at Walmart - Couple Time

After breakfast at IHOP Charles and I decided to take a stroll through Walmart. We grabbed a cart and begin our walk through the home decor aisles.

We had fun checking out the variety of cookware sets. I had no idea that they carried Paula Deen. She has a lovely collection of cookware. We really like the Anodized Better Homes and Gardens set. Their pieces have a good weight and look like they'll hold up.

I found some measuring spoons and cups for only 97 cents and knew I had to buy them. Charles found a knife set and block display that he really liked. I decided to keep it in mind for a Just Because gift.

It's fun walking the aisles, chatting with customers and checking out new products. We always have a great time window shopping together.

Are You Mailing Christmas Cards This Year?

For the last 6 years I've participated in Workplace Like Home's Christmas card exchange. Workplace Like Home is an online virtual water cooler for work at home and telecommuters.

It's refreshing to open our mailbox and receive handmade and store bought Christmas cards from around the US.

I also enjoy addressing and mailing our cards. This year I decided to do a photo collage through Snapfish.
