My Goodness Is It Cold Outside In Las Vegas!

snow in Las Vegas last year

While I'm thrilled to not be taking 5-6 showers due to the heat and my hot flashes it's also been a bit rough being a chronic pain sufferer in the cold! It's like the cold works it's self into my bones. I've been dealing with more muscle tightness and pain during the day. Brr!

Temps have been running in the low 40's-high 30's during daytime. And when the winds kick up it can drop into the low 30's or worst!

On the good side, when I get hit with a hot flash I just need to either walk out onto the patio or sit next to an open window! Relief!

I think when it's all said and done this has to be the second coldest winter we've experienced living here!

Did you know that Las Vegas has an estimated 6000 homeless youth in the Clark County school district?  These numbers are inexcusable in a city that promotes excess!

The Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth offers a variety of services, including housing, health care and clothing.  They recently advised that they have seen the need for services increase by 100%!   Please!  If you can, consider making a $10 online donation at their website today.

Tonight's Dinner: It's Roasted Turkey

I've shared on my blog that I've never cooked a whole turkey before. In our household, my husband or our son has had that privileged. They really enjoyed putting their personal spin on their turkey recipes.

So, when I decided to cook the turkey today, that was thawing in the fridge, Marcus informed me it was time for me to have a turn. Ugh!

There's lots of pressure because if it's dry I'll never hear the end of it! So, before I did any seasoning I immediately headed to Martha Stewart for some tips. With my dining room table covered with several cookbooks, lots of handwritten notes and I'm ready to go.

I decided to use the soaked cheesecloth method, basting every 30 minutes, 350 degrees, since my husband follows this and the turkey turns out beautifully.

The turkey smells and looks delicious!

Unfortunately, I have no personal photos to share. Boo!! The Kodak camera's door latch snapped off. It was still under warranty. After a quick call to Office Depot and was mailed back for a replacement last week!

Fibromyalgia/Chronic Pain Exercises

There's many studies that state the benefits of exercise for chronic pain sufferers.  The trick is finding exercises that are modified for your limitations.  Eric Suerez is one of my favorite Youtube channels for that!

Jack Abbott Isn't an Addict! He's a Chronic Pain Sufferer !

The storyline of Jack Abbott, of The Young and the Restless, being hooked on his pain medication has me gotten me very angry! The Facebook comments and tweets have me angry. Here was a chance, for the writers, to educate people about chronic pain and they blew it!

The character was shot and paralyzed. He went through rehab to learn how to walk again but also came to a realization he was still suffering from chronic pain.

Doctors advised him that he needed to have the bullet removed and he had the surgery. While in the hospital, the writers have the character with a full bottle of opioids, sitting in his hospital bed. He starts self medicating, runs out of them, buys them from a doctor, lies to his friends and family and begans spiraling out of control. The writers and viewers have penned him an addict.

Why aren't other chronic pain sufferers angry about this storyline? Don't they know that we are at war, fighting against PROP, DEA and states so that they can access to opioid prescriptions?

Here's an excerpt from the American Society of Anesthesiologists' article, in response to PROP in August 22, 2012. You can read the entire article, get a link to the PROP by clicking here.:

Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing (PROP), an organization dedicated to reducing morbidity and mortality due to opioids and promoting safe prescribing practices, recently submitted a petition to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting changes to opioid analgesic labels. Specifically, PROP requests that the FDA:

1. Strike the term “moderate” from the indication for non-cancer pain.
2. Add a maximum daily dose, equivalent to 100 milligrams of morphine for non-cancer pain.
3. Add a maximum duration of 90 days for continuous (daily) use for non-cancer pain.

Members of the Congressional Caucus on Prescription Drug Abuse wrote the FDA supporting PROP’s petition and requesting expedited review.

As a chronic pain sufferer I do believe that this is not the appropriate course of action towards the alarming amount of deaths and addictions to opioids. It's only with proper pain education, access to better care and research will answers be found.

And even though I no longer take pain medication since it didn't reduce my pain there are many that it does help!

In the meantime, we can not condone the media to show us in a poor light anymore!

I stopped by Smart 'N Final for a boneless pork loin roast that's on sale for $1.99 a pound today.   At that price I need to buy several!

Along with the Pork Loin, I'm also making collard greens and macaroni salad for dinner.  Yum!

Happy New Year 2013 !

I managed to stay awake to watch The Strip fireworks on TV. Las Vegas wasn't disappointed! The fireworks display was a much better show this year.

We wish you and yours a wonderful 2013 !
