Woman Prescribed 19,000 Oxycodone Pills, Sues Doctor and Pharmacy For $1.5 Million

By Aimee Green, The Oregonian, December 18, 2013

A woman who was prescribed 19,000 oxycodone pills in two years is suing her former Milwaukie doctor for $1.5 million, claiming she became addicted to the massive doses of painkiller and endured an excruciating withdrawal.

Ann Raffaele filed suit this week against osteopathic doctor Edward Goering and Assured Pharmacy in Gresham, which the suit states dispensed the 19,000 pills without questioning whether it was medically justified.

Raffaele, who is now 49, suffered from chronic pain and diabetic thoracic radiculopathy, which is a compression or an irritation near the spine. From 2010 to 2012, Goering prescribed Raffaele an average of 26 oxycodone pills a day, ranging from 15mg to 30mg.

The suit, filed in Multnomah County Circuit Court by Portland attorney John Devlin, stands out because rarely do patients sue medical providers claiming they were irresponsibly prescribed drugs. Attorneys from the Portland firm of Kafoury & McDougal have handled at least 20 cases, including some that faulted a Vancouver pain clinic and Assured Pharmacy for allegedly over-prescribing and dispensing thousands of pills to patients.

You can read the full article at The Oregonian.

Thursday Thoughts ~December 19, 2013

I've missed a couple of weeks of Thursday Thoughts at Ramblings of A Suburban Mom but I'm back! WooHoo!

Do you decorate for Christmas? We certainly do. But, the funny thing is I'm never done! I'll find something, in the back of the closet, and want to display it. Or maybe find an item at Big Lots.

But this year, I am so sick from a bad cold I'm calling this year's decorating DONE!

In this month's My Brown Box, I received notification that this was not only the last box of the year but they're taking a few months off to restructure. Mmm...I wonder if they'll be back in 2014? I really do hope so. I enjoy receiving it.

North African Spiced Shrimp with Couscous from Blue Apron~loaded with lots of different flavors, textures but not a home run for us.

I hope that you will take a moment to send good thoughts, prayers to our homeless youth this Christmas. They are all of our responsiblity. And if you can, please donate to your local homeless youth programs. In Las Vegas, that would be Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. Thank you.

Attorneys General Want FDA to Reconsider Zohydro

Pat Enson, National Pain Report, December 11, 2013

Attorneys general from 29 states have asked the Food and Drug Administration to reconsider its recent approval of Zohydro, a powerful new extended release painkiller.

In a letter sent to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, the attorneys general said they did not want a repeat of the past when narcotic painkillers entered the market without tamper resistant formulas. Drug abusers learned they could crush or liquefy painkillers such as oxycodone to snort or inject the drug.

"We believe your approval of Zohydro ER has the potential to exacerbate our nation’s prescription drug abuse epidemic because this drug will be the first hydrocodone only opioid narcotic that is reportedly five to ten times more potent than traditional hydrocodone products, and it has no abuse deterrent properties,” the letter says.

In October, the FDA ignored the advice of its own advisory panel, which voted to reject Zohydro because of its potential for abuse.

If approved and marketed, Zohydro ER will be abused, possibly at a rate greater than that of currently available hydrocodone combination products,” FDA staff reviewers wrote in a report.

National Pain Report: Neurontin ‘Snake Oil’ Lawsuit Upheld

Pat Anson, Editor, National Pain Report, December 11, 2013

The U.S. Supreme Court this week let stand a jury verdict that ordered Pfizer to pay $142 million to Kaiser Foundation Health for the illegal marketing of Neurontin, an anti-seizure drug that is widely prescribed off-label to treat fibromyalgia and migraines.

The decision clears the way for lawsuits by Aetna and other health insurers against Pfizer for the off-label promotion of Neurontin, a drug once infamously described by a top Pfizer executive as “snake oil.”

The cases stem from a 2004 settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice, in which Pfizer agreed to pay $430 million dollars in fines to resolve misdemeanor criminal and civil charges for the marketing of Neurontin, which is also known by its generic name, gabapentin.

After the settlement, Kaiser and other insurers sued Pfizer to recover the cost of Neurontin prescriptions they paid for, but were prescribed for conditions the drug did not effectively treat.

St. Jude to test chronic pain control without the tingling

article by: JAMES WALSH , Star Tribune, December 4, 2013

For people with chronic pain, the growth of neurostimulation — use of an electric current to block pain messages from reaching the brain — has been a welcome relief. But the technology loses its effectiveness over time and comes with a pesky tingling sensation.

St. Jude Medical Inc. is hoping to end those problems with its Prodigy neurostimulator. The Little Canada-based company said Tuesday it is beginning to enroll U.S. patients in a clinical study of its new spinal cord stimulation system, which delivers what it calls burst stimulation. Burst stimulation delivers closely spaced pulses of electrical energy to a patient’s spinal cord, followed by stretches of quiet — no pulses at all.

The technology “represents an important advancement in neurostimulation therapy,” said Dr. Mark D. Carlson, chief medical officer and vice president of global clinical affairs for St. Jude. “We are excited to be leading the effort ... to bring this novel stimulation mode to market.”

Walgreens Haul ~ November 2013

After attending a Walgreens Twitter Party last month I've become a fan. While hubby was getting his haircut, I stopped off Walgreens, to purchase much needed items.

Armed with my Walgreens Balance Rewards, I went shopping! (I signed up online for a Balance Rewards card.)

I recently discovered Hello mouthwash, it's 99% natural. And I'm all for that! Many Walgreens products are less expensive but just as good as the brand name items.

This gal can never have enough rubber gloves in the house. I use them when washing dishes, cleaning the sink, etc.

My husband requested Axe Natural hair style pomade, Head & Shoulders and AAA batteries. During the winter months, our family goes through body lotion much more quickly. When I see a good price on it, I'll buy it!

Home Depot Trip: Shower Heads

Our son, Marcus' shower head needed replacing so the hubby and I took a walk to our neighborhood Home Depot today!

Are you a fan of the rainfall shower heads? I love the one, my husband, installed in our shower! I actually find myself taking 2-3 showers daily. It's so relaxing.

The ones, with the hand held feature are really nice. Don't you think so too?

Home Depot offers several price points, so one can find a shower head that fits their budget and style!

It can be loads of fun, looking at the varies shower heads. There's so many styles, features and colors!

Did you know that Home Depot carries Waterpik, Moen and Delta?

Our son requested a basic shower head, with just a few settings.

We decided on the Glacier Bay 3-Spray Showerhead in Chrome, for $9.98. And it only took 15 mins for my husband to install the new shower head.

We love shopping at Home Depot!
