Cheap Korean Beef With Brown Rice: My Short-On-Time Dinner Recipe

When I'm short on time and still need to make dinner this is my go-to recipe. What's your go-to recipe?



Korean Beef with Brown Rice

1 pound lean ground beef
1/4 - 1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup soy sauce (I use low-sodium)
1 Tablespoon sesame oil
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
1/2 - 1 teaspoon crushed red peppers (to desired spiciness)
salt and pepper
1 bunch green onions, diced (don't skip this!)

Heat a large skillet over medium heat and brown hamburger with garlic in the sesame oil. Drain most of the fat and add brown sugar, soy sauce, ginger, salt and pepper and red peppers. Simmer for a few minutes to blend the flavors. Serve over steamed rice and top with green onions.

Awful. Needed way more sauce. It was dry and considering all that went into it not near as tasty as I thought it would be. Ended up ordering a pizza and ditched this which is something I hate doing after spending the money on the ingredients.

I've made this before, if you find it too dry, simply add a little water (or a lot) and thicken with a wee bit of cornstarch and water. Easy and delicious recipe!

This turned out so yummy and I can't believe how fast it cooked up. It would also be yummy to use a sliced beef like flank steak or something too, I bet.

When I make my own version, I use the the same amount of soy sauce and sesame oil(1/4 cup).

This was great! If someone finds it too dry, I used a bit a Sriracha and a tad extra soy sauce when I served it. Was fine on it's own but I like a bit extra kick. Thank you!

There's always gotta be someone :( Doesn't matter either way, but what if hello fresh (whatever that is) got the recipe from here?! It's a pretty simple recipe, I'm sure hundreds of people (probably more) came up with this on their own without ever seeing a recipe. If nothing nice or constructive to say, move along Anonymous (the one that posted at 12:16PM that is)!!

This was GREAT! I'm not a beef fan but I loved this as did my hubby. I did double the sauce portions and let it cook down for ~15 min while the rice was cooking. And you are so right about the green onions, they are what makes the dish. Thanks for the recipe! This is now on the regular meal rotation.

I made it and found it was wonderful! I don't know how anyone could find it too dry, it had almost too much sauce and we LOVE sauce in my house! About to make it for the second time tonight.

For everyone out there saying this is dry you probably drained off too much fat. Also try adding a bit of rice vinegar, just a few tbsp adds a nice balance of acidity and more liquid.

Hi, I have a question. Could something else other than sugar be used? if I lessen the amount of sugar do you know if it would change the taste?

I think it would but that's the great thing about a recipe. You can adjust the amount of sugar to your liking.

Exact recipe came from Damn Delicious, who credited it to Six Sisters Stuff, which says the recipe is "slightly adapted from" Lizzy Writes who says she used a Korean BBQ recipe and made changes so it would be really inexpensive and quick, looks and tastes gourmet, and It is really delicious. . Sorry I am a librarian and copyright rules. Just give credit. I gonna try it!

Made this for dinner tonight, added a little extra soy sauce, some salted party peanuts and a bag of coleslaw mix, it was a huge hit. I added some peanut sauce to my dish and it was delicious. Thank you for sharing and God Bless! Darlene

Actually I made this from this recipe before ever hearing of Hello Fresh....didn't even like the Hello Fresh version.

Well while you were cooking it I'm sure you noticed the sauce was absorbing....why didn't you add water or make more sauce? This is a nice simple recipe, hard to screw up.... user error.
