HuffPostLive: The Stigma Of Mental Illness

excerpt from HuffPostLive, Nov. 20, 2013: When people are diagnosed with cancer, friends often bring prepared food and provide comfort. But when someone suffers from mental illness, friends seem to shy away. Why do certain illnesses illicit compassion and others fear?

When I was released from the mental institution, 3 years ago, I wasn't surprised that people didn't know what to say or do. Let's face it...mental illness has very negative images. But I don't blame them.

I had to come to terms, with my Major Depression, first. Once I did that, I found people were very compassionate and supportive.

Friday's Letters ~ November 22, 2013

Friday's Letters

Dear AfterBuzz, I should have watched last week's 'Real Housewives of Atlanta' episode before watching your recap. Wait..thanks to your recap, I really do want to watch last week's episode.

Dear Chef David Burke, I hear that you have had success cooking a delicious, juicy turkey in the dishwasher. My question is, "Can I cook my turkey on the bottom shelf, if my turkey doesn't fit on the top shelf"?

Dear Hubby, I'm looking forward to you having this weekend off. I really miss having you around. XOXO

Thursday Thoughts ~ November 21, 2013

Did you know that psychic and author Sylvia Browne died Wednesday? I remember seeing her on "The Montel Williams Show", many moons ago.

Recently, she was back in the news because she falsely claimed, in 2004, that one of the Cleveland kidnapping victims, Amanda Berry, was dead. Whether you love or didn't, may she rest in peace.

Have you ever had a Dutch Baby? Our son introduced them to me year ago.

And while I strive to eat healthy, sometimes, I just want something comforting. I usually add some fruit, confectionary sugar, syrup. Delicious!

After getting my eyes checked, last week, my new pair of Guess eyeglasses arrived at my local optician office! I'm totally loving them.

Well, it looks like another Gwynnie Bee subscription box has arrived! Gotta go.

What's your Thursday Thoughts

Volupties Subscription Has Arrived! November 2013

Volupties offers an underwear subscription service for curvy ladies, for just $12 a month! (It’s $17/month after that) When you join, you provide your underwear size and each month you will receive 3 pairs of quality sexy underwear from well-known brands via snail mail!

Here's how my Volupties package arrived in the mail today. The small plastic bag actually fit perfectly in our mailbox. A plus for me because I didn't have to stop by the apartment manager's office to pick it up.

This is how the underwear is wrapped. I love pink tissue paper. I'll be adding the tissue paper to my Valentine's Day stash.

This selection of sexy underwear, even included a pair from Hugs and Curves, that I received, this month, will make a welcome addition to my underwear collection. WooHoo!

Heather Von St. James Story ~ Mesothelioma Survivor

I love it when people share their story when dealing with a serious disease. I learn something, that I can put to use, in my life. By sharing this video, I hope that you might find something helpful too!

Excerpt from Heather's Bio~The story of Heather Von St. James, a mesothelioma cancer survivor who has fought incredible odds with her family.

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Heather's father worked in construction, which caused him to unknowingly come home with asbestos fibers on his clothing. This is what caused the second-hand exposure that lead to Heather's cancer. Due to a long latency period, she was not diagnosed with mesothelioma until she was 36 years old and starting a family.

This video describes Heather's journey with her family to beat the odds and fight a rare and deadly cancer called mesothelioma. Her mission is to spread awareness of mesothelioma and to inspire all cancer patients that with hope the odds don't matter.

Have You Heard Of Ocean Naturals Tuna?

Recently, I attended a Twitter party for Ocean Naturals Tuna. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this tuna has no additives or preservatives and is guaranteed 100% responsibly caught Skipjack Tuna. The tuna is caught without the use of FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices) to reduce the catch of non-targeted species.

And get this! Visit Ocean Naturals to find out where your tuna came from. Just enter the lot code from your can of tuna and you'll find out the vessel and Captain who caught the fish, along with where they were fishing!

And the cool thing is, I entered their Facebook contest, and won 2 cans of Ocean Naturals tuna! Thank you Ocean Naturals!

World of Psychology: 9 Ways to Take Care of Yourself When You Have Depression

Written by MARGARITA TARTAKOVSKY, M.S. “Depression is an illness that requires a good deal of self-care,” writes psychologist Deborah Serani, PsyD, in her excellent book Living with Depression: Why Biology and Biography Matter along the Path to Hope and Healing.

But this might seem easier said than done, because when you have depression, the idea of taking care of anything feels like adding another boulder to your already heavy load. Serani understands firsthand the pain and exhaustion of depression. In addition to helping clients manage their depression, Serani works to manage her own, and shares her experiences in Living with Depression.

If you’re feeling better, you might ditch certain self-care habits, too. Maybe you skip a few therapy sessions, miss your medication or shirk other treatment tools. According to Serani, as some people improve, they get relaxed about their treatment plan, and before they know it are blinded to the warning signs and suffer a relapse.

You can read the entire article at Psych Central, World of Psychology.
